EXTENSIVE ROOF GREENING.

In the shape of modules. Simple, energy-efficient & sustainable.

About the modules

The roof greening modules of Plantika fall in the category of extensive roof greening. A green roof system for extensive green roofs is characterized by its simple structure with low-maintenance plants. The green roof modules therefore require a relatively small substrate layer, which means that they have a low surface load. Plantika’s modular roof mounting system enables the greening of sloped roofs and existing roofs. All this is done without the need for costly construction work. Thus, the dream of a green roof can be fulfilled at any time!

Vegetation layer

The top layer of the green roof module is the vegetation layer. It consists of a mix of five to eight different sedum species. To ensure an immediate green roof, the vegetation mat is packed into the module structure with the remaining components only after it has been sufficiently cured in the field, has overwintered at least once, and has a coverage of at least 85%. Sedum plants consist of succulent plants, which can store water in their leaves and thus withstand different weather conditions easily.

Depending on your preference, the vegetation layers can be planted with high- or low-growing sedum species. A combination of sedums, herbs, grasses and meadow flowers is also possible. Thus, there are no limits to the green roof according to your individual taste.

Layer structure

Below the vegetation layer there are two other layers that provide anchorage, nutrients and the supply and drainage of water in the individual modules. The bottom layer is a drainage mat, which allows excess rainwater to drain away easily. Above this is a so-called growth mat. This pH-neutral mineral wool layer, enriched with nutrients, serves as a soil-free substrate layer for the plants. It is easy to root through, makes the percolating water available to the plants and transfers excess water to the drainage and water storage layer below. In the drainage mat, a large part of this rainwater is stored to ensure fluid supply even during possible dry periods. The overlying vegetation layer grows together with the substrate layer and can be composted as a complete package at the end.

Module housing

The housing of the green roof modules is made of recycled aluminium sheet. On the bottom side there are holes that allow the drainage of excess rainwater. The housing is combined with a fastening system approved by DiBT, which enables simple fixing of the module on the roof. By installing the fastening system, no wholes or weak points are inflicted to the roof. This creates a green roof without altering the integrity of it. Also, any repair work to the roof below is not a problem due to the construction design. The green roof system can be dismantled easily, quickly and locally.

All components (vegetation layer, layer structure and module housing) can be 100% recycled, composted and reprocessed.

The green roof modules deliver multiple innovations in the greening of roofs. For the first time, sloped sheet metal and tile roofs can be greened with a modular system. This makes it possible to green parts of roofs individually or even the entire roof. Sloped roofs with an inclination of 3° – 45° can be transformed into an attractive green area.

The installation of the modular green roof is relatively simple and saves long planning in advance. Our selected specialists carry out the installation with trained expertise in a cost- and time-efficient manner. The unique rail system on which the green roof modules are mounted maintains the integrity of the roof. No holes need to be drilled into the existing roof to install the green roof system. An important advantage with this modular design of the extensive green roof system is flexibility. The green roof modules can be removed entirely or only certain parts at any time if repairs or changes need to be made to the roof.

Sedum plants used for greening belong to the family of particularly frugal and robust thick-leaf plants. Sedum species, which are at home both in the cool northern hemisphere and in the dry regions of North Africa, are typically used for extensive green roofs due to their special properties. Their functionality in this context has therefore already been proven many times.

Due to the unique water storage capacity in their thick-fleshed leaves, the plants of this species can survive long dry periods of up to 6 weeks. Thus, even during the hot summer months, you have a bright green roof without the need for costly watering. The plants do not require regular pruning and can thrive themselves, which is why they are perfect for greening roof areas that cannot be walked on.

Thus, the maintenance of green roof modules is at least as simple as their installation. The dream of a beautiful green roof all year can be realized without much effort.

The green roof system should be inspected and maintained about once a year, as recommended for roofs without greenery. The green roof should also be fertilized as needed, usually once or twice a year. This service can be performed by our trained professionals to guarantee a permanently functional and attractive green roof.

The structure and design of the green roof systems are checked for functionality and any defects. Likewise, the mineral wool layer is enriched with new nutrients and fertilizers, so that the plants can once again grow and flourish the whole year without any worries.

Plantika’s green roof modules for extensive roof vegetation convince on various levels. Green roofs create the urgently needed habitat for animals and plants in urban spaces. This noticeably increases biodiversity in overbuilt cities and turns unused roof space into a beautifully designed, well-used place. Modular green roofs not only enhance the appearance of properties and their surroundings, but the installed green roof systems also increase the energy efficiency of houses. Green roof modules allow cooling of the ambient temperature, making cost-intensive air-conditioning systems significantly more efficient or completely superfluous. Furthermore they are increasing the efficiency of photovoltaic systems to generate green electricity. In addition, extensive green roofs help retain rainwater, which protects against flood damage and helps to relieve the sewage system. Lower wastewater and sewer costs result in potential savings. Plantika’s green roof modules are therefore not only sustainable, but also cost-saving.

Extensive green roofs make a positive contribution to climate change adaptation, help save costs, and visually enhance urban living space.
